If you want a 5-star experience then do not stay here. If you want value for your money and a quiet hotel away from the Red Light district then Hotel van Onna is a great choice.
It is located in the Jordaan district, a quaint area with historic 17th century canal houses famous for its cafés, restaurants, unusual shops, but especially for its atmosphere. With its labyrinth of narrow streets and canals, is one of the most characteristic districts of Amsterdam.
The hotel consists of three very beautiful canal houses on the peaceful Bloemgracht (Flower-canal). One of the buildings is a monumental canal house built in 1644. The middle building is the main entrance and is a modern canal house. The last building was originally an old warehouse with its supporting beams still visible in the breakfast room.
It is five minutes to the Anne Frank House and not far from the Royal Palace and the Dam. All of which are easy to reach by foot as is the train station. There are more restaurants and bars within a few minutes of the door than one can hope to visit. Two of my suggestions are Café Chris and Venezia del Nord (pizza & steakhouse) both two short blocks away. The staff is friendly and very helpful in planning your visit.
The beds are comfortable in small rooms (by USA standards) with basic bathrooms but who goes to Amsterdam to just stay in the hotel? There are 41 rooms each with private showers and toilets. All the rooms on the front side have the view of the canal and the rooms on the backside are very quiet. The hotel is a non-smoking and provides free wifi.
Hotel van Onna offers charm, great staff support and good prices in a beautiful setting. The old adage of location, location, location certainly applies but that is just one of the hotel’s strong points. A stay here is well worth it.
